Elon Musk’s SpaceX has acquired xAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) startup behind the social media platform X, in a move that could redefine the future of AI computing, according to a statement released Monday.
The deal combines two of Musk’s high-profile ventures and positions the combined company as a potential $1.2 trillion private powerhouse, according to Bloomberg News.
Musk framed the acquisition as a step toward “space-based AI,” citing the limits of terrestrial data centers, which require enormous power and cooling. “In the long term, space-based AI is obviously the only way to scale,” Musk said. He estimates that within two to three years, orbiting AI data centers will be the lowest-cost method to generate computing power for advanced AI.
Computing beyond Earth
The vision involves launching satellites equipped with AI compute capabilities powered by near-constant solar energy. Musk’s plan imagines millions of tons of AI hardware in orbit, generating hundreds of gigawatts of processing power annually, without the energy and maintenance constraints of Earth-based systems. This approach, he argues, could accelerate breakthroughs in AI, physics, and technology, while paving the way for human expansion beyond Earth.
SpaceX already has the infrastructure for this ambition, with more than 9,000 Starlink satellites providing internet globally, reusable rocket technology, and a Starship launch system capable of delivering massive payloads to orbit. xAI’s AI bot, Grok, and X bring software expertise and real-time data capabilities into the fold, creating what Musk calls “the most ambitious, vertically-integrated innovation engine on (and off) Earth.”
IPO boosts confidence
The acquisition also comes ahead of SpaceX’s anticipated initial public offering (IPO) later this year, potentially strengthening investor confidence by showcasing the company’s futuristic AI ambitions. While xAI has faced regulatory scrutiny over content moderation and deepfake generation, the merger underscores Musk’s strategy of intertwining his ventures—SpaceX, Tesla, xAI, and X—to push technology frontiers across space, AI, and communications.
Experts say the combination signals a bold bet on a new computing paradigm. If successful, space-based AI could dramatically reduce costs, provide near-limitless power, and accelerate AI model training at scales impossible on Earth, essentially turning orbit into the world’s largest supercomputer.
Musk calls it a first step toward humanity becoming a multi-planetary, Kardashev-level civilization, where the Sun’s energy fuels AI and scientific discovery across the cosmos.
