Guardians above Paris: A return to Notre Dame’s towers

The twin towers of the Notre Dame Cathedral, recently stabilized and restored after the devastating 2019 fire that damaged the roof and spire, stand as resilient symbols of medieval Paris. Facing west and dominating the cathedral’s façade, these 860-year-old towers have survived fire, revolutions, wars, and centuries of history, proving their endurance and the city’s commitment to preservation.

Built during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, these buildings were intended to house bells which served an essential role in medieval urban life — marking prayer times, warning of danger, and celebrating major events.

Gothic architectural marvel

Architecturally, these symmetrical, sturdy Gothic structures rise nearly 69 meters above the city. Their massive stone walls, large pointed openings, and rhythmic proportions were engineered to support immense weight while allowing light and sound to travel freely. The flat tops that crowned the towers were encircled by balustrades, showing a powerful and grounded presence emphasizing solidity.

Over the centuries, the towers have witnessed and survived some of the most dramatic moments in French history. From royal and imperial ceremonies to the coronation of Napoleon I and from solemn Te Deums to the Liberation of Paris, they have stood at the heart of the nation’s collective memory.

They endured revolutions, wars, neglect, and transformation. The 2019 fire, however, marked one of the most dramatic tests in their long history. Thanks to the relentless efforts of firefighters, the towers were preserved, proving their resilience amid loss.

Guardians of history

I first climbed the towers in 2016, and the experience felt magical. Ten years later, in 2026, I returned — climbing all 424 steps once again to admire the newly restored towers. From the top, Paris unfolded in every direction, with iconic gargoyles watching over the city below. These silent guardians embody centuries of faith, revolution, literature, and resilience within the stone walls.

As I descended the winding stone staircase, the sounds of modern Paris slowly returned. Yet something lingered — a sense of continuity, of having been briefly transported into centuries past. From above, the towers of Notre Dame do not simply offer a view of Paris; they offer perspective, reminding us why this city, and its monuments, continue to captivate the world.
